I finally ordered from Emitations

Posted by: gwen on: December 2, 2009

For several years now, I have been subscribed to the Emitations.com mailing list, drooling over the fabulous-looking premium cubic zirconia jewelry, but I haven’t purchased anything… until now.

There was the cashflow worries and–I can hardly remember–I think they did not deliver to Canada for a while… or shipping was prohibitively expensive. However, all the stars aligned recently: they had a 30% “Pink Friday” sale, the Canadian dollar is close to par with the American dollar, and a quick check told me that shipping was only $5.99!

I made an order in the last hour of the promotion and I wait in tenterhooks to see (1) if I get charged loads in tariffs, (2) how close they look to their fabulous pictures, and (3) if I sized my fingers properly!
Judy’s 24″ Imitation Pearl Jewelry Set
Reg. $24.99, Sale $14.99
5 stars (based on 2 reviews)

Every proper girl needs a pearl set, no? So this will be my starter set. I am certainly self-conscious about wearing something so “grown-up” but it’s time!!

Odessa’s Black Infinity Ring
Reg. $55.00, Sale $29.99
5 stars (3 reviews)

You might laugh but I purchased 3 rings that I thought would be a middle finger ring, ring finger ring, and pinky finger ring… not all at the same time! This striking-looking black infinity ring is slated to be a middle finger ring but my ring finger is quite close in size. I just love the idea of how this will contrast against my skin tone. And, believe it or not, my fingers are kind of slender and slim rings look good on them.

Trista’s Promise Ring — Canary Princess Cut CZ
Reg. $49.99, Sale $24.99
4.5 stars (47 reviews)

Every now and then, I will visit the Emitations.com site after I see an advertisement and I like visiting the celebrity engagement ring section and dream a little seeing the gallery of celebrities’ engagement rings and the knock-offs Emitations carries. I think this ring  is then inspired by that of Trista, the first Bachelorette. I chose this over a pink version because I’m just not that much of a pink girl. It seems that this is a very popular ring and most of the reviews are positively glowing.

Angelina’s CA Pinky Eternity Ring
Reg. $39.00, Sale $34.99
No reviews yet

Finally, I spied this pinky eternity band. It’s to be worn on my pinky? That is so according to the website. I love the vintage look but nervous about there being no reviews and if it fits.

I hope that when I update, I will only be able to add positive reviews!

Favourite Cheese Crackers

Posted by: gwen on: November 25, 2009

I just wanted to blog about my favourite cheese crackers. Since August 12, 2009 (so, three months now), I have given up eating chips (potato chips, Asian chips, nachos, etc.) but I certainly cannot give up cheese crackers. It’s not like I was gorging on Cheese Nips–even I can be snobby against those.

My boss at the place where I used to work deposited a few times a foil-wrapped tray of cheese crackers so I never knew the brand. If I was the only person there, I couldn’t resist scarfing down more than my share of the crackers. Ugh.

I was walking around my neighbourhood Save On looking for the newest and latest that the market decided to re-sell and in the marked organic section in the crackers aisle, I saw the boxes that were clearly what my former boss was bringing in, John WM Macy crackers!

Because these crackers provide intensity in the realms of cheesiness and crunchiness, I must try all the flavours available (and then “retry” them); fortunately there are only four flavours available at the local market!

Cheese Sticks

I think the only flavours available are Romano Garlic and Melting Parmesan. Dijon Swiss, Cheddar & Scallion, and Tuscan Swiss certainly are not among the flavours imported to the store. Cheese sticks are elegant but there can only be so many in a box and then you’re out.

Cheese Crisps

Cheese crisps I know much more intimately! The two flavours Save On carries are Melting Romano and Cheddar & Asiago. They do not carry White Onion, Smoked Jalapeno, and Sesame Gruyere. (Mmm, that sesame gruyere sounds super!) Of the two flavours available, I like cheddar & asiago much more–it is sharper with the extra spices.

I should update this post with some nutrition comparison with, say, Cheese Nips which are definitely not found in the green-marked organic section of the crackers aisle but here is what I know about the cheese crips: 15 crackers cost you 195cal; the whole box costs you 590cal. I can forgo dinner and eat a box, eep.

Growing Up My Place

Posted by: gwen on: November 18, 2009

At the prospect of not moving out of my place for another six months (or more), I’ve been making some changes to my apartment. It’s also just in time for the cozy winter season. And true to my wistful nature, I wish I had done all this sooner!

In a big rash move, I sold my beech veneer (kind of orange-coloured) Malm bed. I forgot that the slats cost extra and undersold myself. When I realized my gaffe (which was a niggling suspicion when there was so much interest in buying it so fast!), I felt some seller’s remorse. I was not assuaged until we had set up my new bed, a brown-black Hopen bed that is darker, higher, and wider than my previous bed. The Boy was impressed that I had finally purchased a mature bed.

How many of these will I buy (and keep)? I wonder what the quality is like??
This blog post it is like a guide to bring with me to BM to try remember which rings to try on.

- I love the idea of black diamonds and how slender this ring is.

Summer 2009 at Old Navy

Posted by: gwen on: April 27, 2009

oldnavy-2009-summerI am so impressionable. I was so hooked upon seeing the juicy spring and summer colours of Old Navy’s 2009 linen fashions that I couldn’t wait to get to my nearest Old Navy.

Of course, after years of experience, I knew to keep my enthusiasm in check. Old Navy in particular has this thing about looking great on paper but far less appealing when you see it in person. And I was right.

The floral tank top was definitely drab in real life. Ditto for the shoes and scarf.

I did not look hard enough for the shrug sweater, linen pants, or the dress. That dress, in linen, was not bound to look nice anyhow.

The bag was too big to be cute-looking.

And, as mentioned in the photo, the sleeveless shirt is not available in stores and can be purchased only through the website.

So, not surprisingly, I walked away empty-handed.

Falling for this season’s metallics

Posted by: gwen on: June 1, 2008

Are metallics in this season? I can’t remember. But they are catching my eye for the first time in 8 or 10 years. I thought I had grown up and left them behind… but they sucked me back in!

I try to shop at Spring because most of their summer shoes are reasonably price at $39.99. As it happens all three of the following shoes are that price.

Bishops sandal in silver
Actually a relative returned from Asia with a huge score of shoes and accessories and I scored gold flip-flops in this style. Yeah, I’m stoked that I have such “fashionable” shoes in a colour that regular Spring shoppers cannot attain!

Nataly sandals in silver
I wouldn’t normally look for sandals of this size. They remind me uncomfortably of the ’90s when I wore (sedated) clubbing wear to school. But I’m wearing a sky blue dress as a bridesmaid and I figured my shoe colour choices were narrow, including the exact shade of blue or “neutrals” like metallics or those transparent Cinderella shoes. Maybe I’ll keep my eyes peeled for transparent shoes.
The heel on this sandal is not too thick so I won’t be sinking in grass immediately and it may not be too uncomfortable or wobbly.

Huaqillas sandals in gold
I’m not sure how comfortable the wiry mesh is after even just five minutes. However, there is this vibe about the shoe that would look cute with dark jeans. I haven’t had a low-heel sandal to kick about with everything. I don’t own anything peep-toe and I think the mesh camouflages my bunion. Unless it’s royally uncomfortable, I would get more wear and enjoy these shoes more then the silver strapppy sandals.

Yummy organic rice cakes… seriously!

Posted by: gwen on: May 29, 2008

During one of my self-destructive strolls through the IGA Marketplace near work, that is when I’m armed with a wallet, I picked up chips (ugh) and cookies (ugh) and continued to stroll through the aisles looking for what’s new, or new to me. Perhaps I would find something that I did not have to hide in my drawer at work and sneak snacks from!

In the crackers and “healthier snacks” aisle, I was drawn to the Lundberg Family Farms rice cakes because of the yellow sale sticker. =P IGA had some or all of the savoury cakes selection but it was an easy pick to go with Tamari with Seaweed. Seaweed is definitely exotic on my rice cake where I’m tired of my favourite flavours – ketchup that doesn’t taste like ketchup chips ketchup, and sour cream and onion – and other flavours are just so… Western. You know what flavours I’m talking about: butter, caramel, kettle corn, white cheddar! Shudder.

Somehow, I didn’t start in on the rice cakes until over a week after the purchase and thank goodness! I have re-discovered rice cakes with the pungent, slightly salty seaweed (nori) that is sprinkled across the ever-so crispy rice cake.

Lundberg boasts that the finest whole grain brown rice is used in this product and that there is twice as much rice as found in other rice cakes. Having more rice is not a problem… when it’s brown rice!

The nutritional details can be found at their webpage. I had 3 and was awfully satiated. Each rice cake has 70 calories, no fat, no cholesterol, 125 mg sodium, 90 mg potassium, 15 grams of carbohydrates (1 gram fiber), and 1 gram of protein.

Cheap and convenient: McDonald’s Cinnamon Melts

Posted by: gwen on: March 18, 2008

I’m a little late to sampling and reviewing McDonald’s Cinnamon Melts because it seems not to have arrived in Canada except nearly a year after it appeared in the States. Thus, one of my favourite snarky food reviewers, The Impulsive Buy, reviewed them 11 months ago.

I entered the restaurant yesterday morning because I happened to have taken an earlier ferry and enjoyed a Cinnamon Melt as the dessert to my cereal+fiber breakfast. That’s where it’s convenient: McDonald’s out-number the cinnamon bun stands.

The lovely icing, of which there is ample drizzled over and pooled under, is indistinguishable to me from that of Cinnabon or Cinnzeo. Then the pastry itself was warm and fluffy, also indistinguishable to me from that of the cinnamon bun franchises. What was different, however, was the petal-like arrangement of the “bun” for if you tugged only lightly, you could pull off a bite-sized morsel. Meanwhile, you need to wield a fork and knife to eat the spiral-shaped cinnamon buns of Cinnabon/zeo. Perhaps a downside is that you don’t end up savouring it for as long!

At the end of the day, spare change was burning a hole in my pocket and I reasoned with myself that I had only spend $1.88 on a cinnamon treat that spending another $1.88 only brought me up to the cost of a full-sized cinnamon bun from Cinnabon/zeo, n’est-ce pas? I was riding the ferry again and it was easy to eat it (way too fast) with it balanced on my lap.

But what about the caloric content? I’ve got the information from two sources.

McDonald’s Cinnamon Melts (from TIB’s review)
460 calories / 19 g fat (9 g saturated) / 32 g sugar

Classic Cinnabon Roll (from calorie-count.com)
730 calories / 24 g fat / 114 g carbohydrates

In that context, Cinnamon Melts are worse than the Cinnabon version. Classic example of how very little money can only buy you something bad for you!

Price: $1.79 + tax

Recent acquisitions :)

I’ve got working on my mind and that drives what I’ve been purchasing. It’s okay to buy clothes that I can wear for work even though I have no income, right….?

Did I tell you what happened to our Roots gift certificates over the holidays? We were issued two $50 gift certificates when we redeemed some loyalty points but when it came time to use them, it turned out one of them was actually encoded for $150! Suddenly we had $200 to burn up at Roots where their best item is their sweatshirts. :S

I got two hoodies in Halifax and had to return to Vancouver and shop their “flagship” store on Robson to come up with the Equestrian Toggle Button sweater. Love it. It’s so preppy. The damn thing was $60 originally but marked down by 30% and then I had about $42 left on my gift certificate and only paid $2!

Currently reading: Confessions of a Teen Sleuth

Posted by: gwen on: February 14, 2008

I realize it’s been an extremely long time since I read a Nancy Drew mystery. I’m not lamenting missing that style of writing but more so the passing of the years. =S

So I was quite compelled when I saw there was a parody, in the form of Chelsea Cain’s Confessions of a Teen Sleuth: A Parody. Okay, I was very compelled by the $4.99 sticker price and wanted to relive my youth of devouring each Nancy Drew mystery (the white covers) as they came out.

confessions-of-a-teen-sleuth.jpg

Oh but I was quite wrong and disappointed.

First of all, the voice doesn’t sit right with me. She does have the fire that is fitting for someone as talented as she is but the sarcasm wasn’t pure and tended to ruin my reading experience. That’s what you get when you are reading a parody and not a supposed prequel or sequel. Then, there was one technologically implausible story involving advanced aircrafts and robots. Finally, the licenses taken to elaborate on the lives of Nancy Drew’s friends were taken too far, in my opinion.

Was I simply naive about what a parody entailed? Perhaps. But I did read Pride and Promiscuity: The Lost Sex Scenes of Jane Austen – good God, I hope I got that on sale – and it was not so shocking because the writing style attempted to imitate that of Miss Austen’s. Am I a prude who doesn’t want to see my classics tainted? Yeah, I think so.

I really enjoyed Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind” that I picked up over a decade ago now (!!). It was perhaps because the writing style was not too far off what I loved of the first novel and its writing was carefully commissioned. Likewise, I’m looking forward to receiving the Anne of Green Gables prequel, Before Green Gables!
