Ben Moss sale

23 08 2009

How many of these will I buy (and keep)? I wonder what the quality is like??
This blog post it is like a guide to bring with me to BM to try remember which rings to try on.

Enhanced Black Diamonds, 10k White Gold (80.99, down from 89.99)
- I love the idea of black diamonds and how slender this ring is.

Aquamarine and Diamonds (89.99, down from 99.99)
- Beautiful, but I’m quite sure this style is too mature and too gaudy on me until it’s an engagement ring.

Blue Topaz & Iolite, 10k White Gold (197.10, down from 219.00)

- This ring is so dramatic! Love it and the colours. Wish it was cheaper.

Blue Topaz, London Blue Topaz and Diamonds, 10k White Gold (139.10, down from 149.00)
- Not sure this ring isn’t too obnoxious.

Emerald , 10k White Gold (89.99, down from 99.99)
- Afraid the emerald is too small and this is too cheap-looking.

Peridot and Pink Tourmaline, 10k White Gold (197.10, down from 219.00)
- Afraid the pink and green is too childish.

Smokey Quartz and Pink Tourmaline, 10k Rose Gold (197.10, down from 219.00)
- Pretty “rose gold” and subtle colour combination. Wish it wasn’t so much.

Summer 2009 at Old Navy

27 04 2009

oldnavy-2009-summerI am so impressionable. I was so hooked upon seeing the juicy spring and summer colours of Old Navy’s 2009 linen fashions that I couldn’t wait to get to my nearest Old Navy.

Of course, after years of experience, I knew to keep my enthusiasm in check. Old Navy in particular has this thing about looking great on paper but far less appealing when you see it in person. And I was right.

The floral tank top was definitely drab in real life. Ditto for the shoes and scarf.

I did not look hard enough for the shrug sweater, linen pants, or the dress. That dress, in linen, was not bound to look nice anyhow.

The bag was too big to be cute-looking.

And, as mentioned in the photo, the sleeveless shirt is not available in stores and can be purchased only through the website.

So, not surprisingly, I walked away empty-handed.

Falling for this season’s metallics

1 06 2008

Are metallics in this season? I can’t remember. But they are catching my eye for the first time in 8 or 10 years. I thought I had grown up and left them behind… but they sucked me back in!

I try to shop at Spring because most of their summer shoes are reasonably price at $39.99. As it happens all three of the following shoes are that price.

Bishops sandal in silver
Actually a relative returned from Asia with a huge score of shoes and accessories and I scored gold flip-flops in this style. Yeah, I’m stoked that I have such “fashionable” shoes in a colour that regular Spring shoppers cannot attain!

Nataly sandals in silver
I wouldn’t normally look for sandals of this size. They remind me uncomfortably of the ’90s when I wore (sedated) clubbing wear to school. But I’m wearing a sky blue dress as a bridesmaid and I figured my shoe colour choices were narrow, including the exact shade of blue or “neutrals” like metallics or those transparent Cinderella shoes. Maybe I’ll keep my eyes peeled for transparent shoes.
The heel on this sandal is not too thick so I won’t be sinking in grass immediately and it may not be too uncomfortable or wobbly.

Huaqillas sandals in gold
I’m not sure how comfortable the wiry mesh is after even just five minutes. However, there is this vibe about the shoe that would look cute with dark jeans. I haven’t had a low-heel sandal to kick about with everything. I don’t own anything peep-toe and I think the mesh camouflages my bunion. Unless it’s royally uncomfortable, I would get more wear and enjoy these shoes more then the silver strapppy sandals.

Yummy organic rice cakes… seriously!

29 05 2008

During one of my self-destructive strolls through the IGA Marketplace near work, that is when I’m armed with a wallet, I picked up chips (ugh) and cookies (ugh) and continued to stroll through the aisles looking for what’s new, or new to me. Perhaps I would find something that I did not have to hide in my drawer at work and sneak snacks from!

In the crackers and “healthier snacks” aisle, I was drawn to the Lundberg Family Farms rice cakes because of the yellow sale sticker. =P IGA had some or all of the savoury cakes selection but it was an easy pick to go with Tamari with Seaweed. Seaweed is definitely exotic on my rice cake where I’m tired of my favourite flavours – ketchup that doesn’t taste like ketchup chips ketchup, and sour cream and onion – and other flavours are just so… Western. You know what flavours I’m talking about: butter, caramel, kettle corn, white cheddar! Shudder.

Somehow, I didn’t start in on the rice cakes until over a week after the purchase and thank goodness! I have re-discovered rice cakes with the pungent, slightly salty seaweed (nori) that is sprinkled across the ever-so crispy rice cake.

Lundberg boasts that the finest whole grain brown rice is used in this product and that there is twice as much rice as found in other rice cakes. Having more rice is not a problem… when it’s brown rice!

The nutritional details can be found at their webpage. I had 3 and was awfully satiated. Each rice cake has 70 calories, no fat, no cholesterol, 125 mg sodium, 90 mg potassium, 15 grams of carbohydrates (1 gram fiber), and 1 gram of protein.

Cheap and convenient: McDonald’s Cinnamon Melts

18 03 2008

I’m a little late to sampling and reviewing McDonald’s Cinnamon Melts because it seems not to have arrived in Canada except nearly a year after it appeared in the States. Thus, one of my favourite snarky food reviewers, The Impulsive Buy, reviewed them 11 months ago.

I entered the restaurant yesterday morning because I happened to have taken an earlier ferry and enjoyed a Cinnamon Melt as the dessert to my cereal+fiber breakfast. That’s where it’s convenient: McDonald’s out-number the cinnamon bun stands.

The lovely icing, of which there is ample drizzled over and pooled under, is indistinguishable to me from that of Cinnabon or Cinnzeo. Then the pastry itself was warm and fluffy, also indistinguishable to me from that of the cinnamon bun franchises. What was different, however, was the petal-like arrangement of the “bun” for if you tugged only lightly, you could pull off a bite-sized morsel. Meanwhile, you need to wield a fork and knife to eat the spiral-shaped cinnamon buns of Cinnabon/zeo. Perhaps a downside is that you don’t end up savouring it for as long!

At the end of the day, spare change was burning a hole in my pocket and I reasoned with myself that I had only spend $1.88 on a cinnamon treat that spending another $1.88 only brought me up to the cost of a full-sized cinnamon bun from Cinnabon/zeo, n’est-ce pas? I was riding the ferry again and it was easy to eat it (way too fast) with it balanced on my lap.

But what about the caloric content? I’ve got the information from two sources.

McDonald’s Cinnamon Melts (from TIB’s review)
460 calories / 19 g fat (9 g saturated) / 32 g sugar

Classic Cinnabon Roll (from calorie-count.com)
730 calories / 24 g fat / 114 g carbohydrates

In that context, Cinnamon Melts are worse than the Cinnabon version. Classic example of how very little money can only buy you something bad for you!

Price: $1.79 + tax
Vendor: McDonald’s

Recent acquisitions :)

15 02 2008

I’ve got working on my mind and that drives what I’ve been purchasing. It’s okay to buy clothes that I can wear for work even though I have no income, right….?

Did I tell you what happened to our Roots gift certificates over the holidays? We were issued two $50 gift certificates when we redeemed some loyalty points but when it came time to use them, it turned out one of them was actually encoded for $150! Suddenly we had $200 to burn up at Roots where their best item is their sweatshirts. :S

roots-equestrian-toggle-sweater-nautical-navy.jpg

I got two hoodies in Halifax and had to return to Vancouver and shop their “flagship” store on Robson to come up with the Equestrian Toggle Button sweater. Love it. It’s so preppy. The damn thing was $60 originally but marked down by 30% and then I had about $42 left on my gift certificate and only paid $2!

I’ve also been shopping at Jacob, a fantastic place to get monochromatic working clothes. During one trip with The Boy, I got a sateen skirt with side pockets on sale for $19.99. In another very thorough trip, I carefully combed their sale section and came up with three sale items. Then I gave the rest of the store a chance and came up with three less thrifty items. I’m happy nonetheless.

The purpose of that trip was to find a dressy button-up shirt to wear with my suit. That was accomplished for a heartbreaking $29.99 but the shirt is just the right thing: kind of peachy in colour so it matches the peachy pearl earrings and necklace set that Ray gave me a long time ago.

I got two “faux-wrap” items, as they happened to be called. That is, the flaps are stitched down but it looks like a wrap cardigan. The good thing about faux-wrap is that the flaps won’t budge. I got a gray long-sleeve faux-wrap sweater on sale for $19.99 and I got the following vest in black for – get this – $35. I was reluctant but had made decent deals on the other two items that day….

Most recently, I went on a shopping bonanza at the mega-mall, Metrotown, in Burnaby. I was on a rampage to get ankle boots or something from Payless and after carefully trying on several styles, I ended up with the black “shootie”, a cross between a shoe and a bootie. I love it. There is a little elastic around the tongue so the synthetic leather does not have to stretch and the coverage means my foot is not sliding in and out of the shoe. I couldn’t find it in my best size, 6, but am very happy with the 5-1/2 in a Wide width. Perhaps that is my best size (until too much walking makes my foot pinch no matter what).

It was BOGO time at Payless, as it is about 80% of the year, so I happy bought a black tote with a little bit of “bling” that is hopefully not easily identifiable as The Payless Brand. This will probably replace the $50 woven nylon convertible tote I’ve been using that slouches too much and just isn’t smart enough for girl my age.

Both items were $29.99 so I got $15 off. :D

payless-josephine-tote-black.jpg

I wish I could link an official photograph for the tunic I bought at Mariposa. (You mean the clubbing store?) Yes, I made a bee-line for the sedate section and saw a charcoal gray tunic with puffed bubble short sleeves, a mock turtleneck collar, and a keyhole on the back. It’s quite basic and looks knit and I got it for $27 less 20%. I’ve already worn it with black trousers and The Boy said it was quite slimming. :D That remark alone makes me want to go and get the red and black version but… we know how it turns out when I get duplicates… or should I?

I was chatting with BFF#2 and showing her the high-bling Swarovski crystal earrings (#1) The Boy got me as a Christmas present. Alas, I haven’t had a chance to wear them yet – way too shiny and big – and I found examples of earrings I MAY have preferred (#2,#3). But I was shocked and pleased to find that the ones he bought for me originally cost $105. Wow-ee.

I’ve learned that in a relationship, you can’t go exchanging EVERY present you get. #2 is close enough to #1 so I guess I’ll buy #3 for myself or hint later that I like that cluster style….

Currently reading: Confessions of a Teen Sleuth

14 02 2008

I realize it’s been an extremely long time since I read a Nancy Drew mystery. I’m not lamenting missing that style of writing but more so the passing of the years. =S

So I was quite compelled when I saw there was a parody, in the form of Chelsea Cain’s Confessions of a Teen Sleuth: A Parody. Okay, I was very compelled by the $4.99 sticker price and wanted to relive my youth of devouring each Nancy Drew mystery (the white covers) as they came out.

confessions-of-a-teen-sleuth.jpg

Oh but I was quite wrong and disappointed.

First of all, the voice doesn’t sit right with me. She does have the fire that is fitting for someone as talented as she is but the sarcasm wasn’t pure and tended to ruin my reading experience. That’s what you get when you are reading a parody and not a supposed prequel or sequel. Then, there was one technologically implausible story involving advanced aircrafts and robots. Finally, the licenses taken to elaborate on the lives of Nancy Drew’s friends were taken too far, in my opinion.

Was I simply naive about what a parody entailed? Perhaps. But I did read Pride and Promiscuity: The Lost Sex Scenes of Jane Austen – good God, I hope I got that on sale – and it was not so shocking because the writing style attempted to imitate that of Miss Austen’s. Am I a prude who doesn’t want to see my classics tainted? Yeah, I think so.

I really enjoyed Scarlett: The Sequel to Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind” that I picked up over a decade ago now (!!). It was perhaps because the writing style was not too far off what I loved of the first novel and its writing was carefully commissioned. Likewise, I’m looking forward to receiving the Anne of Green Gables prequel, Before Green Gables!

Instituting a girly routine, for my standards

8 01 2008

I have to recant a previous post where I expressed fear about the Listerine Whitening Pre-Rinse. Quite fortunately, I did not experience the skin-sloughing that my sister warned me about. So now I’ve fallen head-long into the following night-time pre-bed routine.

(Given my practical nature and present financial circumstances, all the products I use can be found at a discount drug store.)

The Face
1. Wash face with Noxzema. Since finding the pump version, I haven’t looked back. (300 mL for $8.49)
2. Apply toner. I’ve stayed with Clean & Clear and just picked up Cooling Daily Pore Toner. (235 mL for $7.49) All three offerings (Daily Pore, Black Clearing, and Oil Controling) sound very attractive to me!
3. Apply moisturizer. I use Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer (118 mL for $7.49) It has no SPF nor do I need it at night. I just love the refreshingly cool feeling upon application.

The Mouth
1. Floss with Gum Butterweave floss (200 yards for $3.99).
2. Pre-rinse for 60 seconds with 15 mL of Listerine Whitening Pre-Rinse. (946 mL for $9.99)
3. Brush teeth. Currently using Colgate liquid toothpaste, I like to experiment with no strong allegiances. (100 mL for $2.69)
4. Post-rinse for 30 seconds with 20 mL of Listerine. (1L for $5.99)
4. Apply lip balm. I keep a little jar of balm on my headboard – a tube would roll behind the headboard between it and the wall.

I take it as a part of growing up and planning just a little more before going to sleep. I’m worth it.

Black Friday Wishlist

25 11 2007

I’ve been scant with posting because of a change of my employment status and I’m also going to blame NaNoWriMo because I’ve had to prioritize my other writing this month.

However, the change of employment status (i.e., from a shoddy income to none at all) did not change my full-tilt shopping trip in the wee hours of Black Friday morning. It really was the crowds that were discouraging and display tables in complete disarray.

But who cares about what I actually bought – cute Roxy flats, cute shirts from J.Crew, cute sweater from Abercrombie, cute coat from American Eagle – because I dream of bigger things when I get a job that pays anything at all.

(See my WISHLIST page.)

I also purchased recently – just because terminating my position makes me shop-happy?! – two pieces of Skyway luggage ($97 thanks to 60% discounts), “100% Cashmere” sweater from Old Navy down from $80 to $55 in post-Thanksgiving sales, and new $70 loafers from Aldo simply because I got tired of my other shoes. Ugh.

A day in the life of….

29 10 2007

Saturday was a big shopping day for Gwennie and it was quite ironic that one of the last things I read before heading out was “advice” from Lifehacker.com: One In, Two Out.

I run now on Saturday mornings and since I don’t run often enough during the week, the long distances (13K this time) wipe me out. We are also working out harder for these long runs so I’m that much more tired! This weekend there was no time to dawdle after the run and I was off again after a quick shower.

I started by walking to the clothing donation bin (6 blocks away) to drop off an Old Navy long light khaki skirt and Old Navy evergreen slacks that I have not worn for a year or two.

On the way to the bin, I walked through a yard sale oddly taking place at an intersection and not in front of a residence but an empty lot. There, I spotted some “fur” coats and muffs, a “Prada” bag and wallet, and a black “Kate Spade” bag. I was pretty sure it was a fake – a quick check that the interior had no design whatsoever pretty much confirmed it – but paid only $3 for it. (It is indeed a fake as closer inspection shows there is too-close spacing between the “S” and the “P” in the label.)

Then I was off to get my budget haircut. For adults, it’s only $15, but I can wave my student card for a little while yet and got $2 off. Good for the stylist as I am then less stingy about tip! She refreshed my layers and thinned out my hair.

I went to the library to get a card and borrowed what books I could. Since the library system is still coping with backlog from a 3- (or 4-) month strike, it is not yet possible to place a hold on a book through the system and I’m not traveling across the city for my silly self-help books! Fixing myself can wait for a few weeks!

It was by then 2 p.m. and I was already so tired. I met up with The Boy to help him choose a retro outfit for his work party and we were off to the MegaMall where I got my lunch-dinner from Tim Hortons.

Rant: Across this city every last Tims employee is aggravatingly incompetent. I want to give the employees more credit but they keep looking for reasons to appear unreliable. After checking the contents of each of the six soups twice, the boy still gave me the wrong one. And they were all generally slow.

The Boy took off for his party and I had time again for myself….!

My first stop was The Bay for a winter-appropriate bell hat. I found the same style of angora hats in cream, black, light pink, and light blue and considered them despite Lil’ Sis’ suggestion against angora. It was just $25 when I was somewhat poised to plunk down $38 at a stupid trendy store, Accessorize, where the only option was black angora. I went with cream angora bell hat and was further pleased with myself when the cashier said it was 25% off!

Then I was off to T&T with the primary goal of picking up some mirin. But getting one thing was lame so I also bought some dried mango, seaweed snacks, and Taiwanese rice cakes. That latter is a “gift” for my family when I visit for Christmas.

I stopped at nearly all the jewelry kiosks in the mall. Will I get Lil’ Sis something like that? My friend, Flame, is having a birthday coming up, and Christmas is coming up, too. I was letting ideas come to me.

I went to Sportchek to look at waterproof shells. It seems not to be the season for it and I exited feeling discouraged and completely drained.

Good thing I brought some snacks and while seated on one of those sofas provided as respite to weary shoppers, I downed my Vita Lemon Tea and a Nature Valley Sweet & Salty Peanut Butter bar.

Needing to conserve energy, I mapped the last few shops to hit up: Smart Set, Jacob, and Fairweather. I had spent all day happily avoiding the difficult task at hand: buying a suit.

Along the way, I stopped in at Seduction for accessories. I quickly found a blue-on-blue striped scarf that will diversify my navy H&M blazer. I also saw a pretty green plaid sateen hairband. The other colour option was red and that’s just so cliche. Then I found a pair of ultra-cheap ($3.95) dangling gold-coloured and rhinestone earrings and it was 2-for-1 so I looked for another accessory. As the cashier was processing the red earrings made from shells and shaped as a flower, I change my mind and swap them out for equally-priced bangles (6 “silver” and 6 “gold”). She also told me the hairbands are 2-for-1 and I threw in the cliche red plaid sateen hairband as well!

I went to Fairweather first to definitively rule out their blazers. They are decently priced but I didn’t like the pockets with obnoxious flaps. I wasn’t hitting up Jacob for a blazer because I knew they were $100+ so I was back at Smart Set.

At Smart Set, they had two blazers. One was a one-button, gray, and with slanted slit pockets. It was $49.99 and had a matching trouser ($39.99) and skirt. The skirt style was definitely not A-line – it flared on the bottom. Because I have broad shoulders, I have to wear a size 5 jacket and can squeeze into size 3 pants. The black blazer had extra vertical seams in the front that did not look very good on the hanger and I can’t remember the pockets. It also cost $49.99. It had a matching A-line skirt ($34.99) and presumably pants, too. I grabbed a fitted white shirt with subtle metallic stripes ($38) to wear under the jacket.

Shopping for a suit is about as harrowing as shopping for a bathing suit. :S I tried on the black one first and felt just plain weird. I did not pick up pants to try on because I brought my own pair of black pants and – because I have foresight – I brought the pointed-toe pumps that I would wear with a suit. I felt wrong in the black – too serious for myself. So I went over to the gray suit. The blazer felt as if it fit better because it was just one button but it seemed so trendy. The gray skirt was a nightmare – I am too short for where it started to flare. The trousers were nice but I needed to get them hemmed and to remove the pockets – I hate when you can see the outline of pockets on your thighs! Then I gave the black blazer another chance and felt rather decent afterall and went with it. Many factors pointed to the black blazer and A-line skirt being the right choice: not trendy with just one button, matching A-line skirt is a decent item on its own in my closet, no need to buy a pair of pants, and my first suit in over a decade should be a basic black and not “Are you trying to stand out?”-gray.

That trying ordeal took the greater part of 45 minutes. :S But it was a huge weight off me to know that I had a suit whenever an interview should come around….

The final “shop” was the Superstore. Since I was alone, it was a good opportunity to peruse the aisles of clothing a la Joe Fresh Style that have advertisements with whimsical diddies playing.

Quite immediately, I saw a cream down vest ($29) and a beige cargo jacket ($39). These seemed like the priciest pieces they had to offer. The vest was a size medium and ended a little too long for my liking – otherwise it was quite perfect… except for the used toothpick (from, say, a sausage sample) in the pocket. Ewww! I was bent on a light-coloured jacket because The Boy and I are tired of my navy jacket and it fit right and has enough details to make it look worth more than it is. For all it’s details, the jacket is, however, not lined. A few other food items were cheaper at Superstore and I walked away a happy customer!

The ride back home was long and I was weary, but it was a really great and productive day! =)
