On the topic of blasts from the past, I was just strolling the aisles of the bright Save On Foods market and saw the boxes of Grain Shop in the cereal aisle.
Hmmm, that name sounds really familiar…. And so I read the tagline closer and it all seemed very familiar: “Oven toasted bran strands, corn flakes, wheat flakes, crisp rice puffs & whole oats”. Either I was remembering Just Right’s ingredients or I did remember a cereal, also called Grain Shop, from many dozens of moons ago. I used to love that cereal! The box used to more white – no yellow cornfields – script font logo was not as big or on a purple background so there a lot of white space on the box. And it’s made by Weetabix, which sounds about right, recalling my Grain Shop was not made by Kelloggs or Post or those big companies.
It was only $3.99 which is cheap if you paid that at inflated Safeway and I couldn’t wait for a sale to come around to try Grain Shop again. I remembered how it just disappeared one week and I was so sad and lost and an in need of another cereal to wake up for day in and day out.
Happily, Grain Shop takes as good as it ever did. With five great grains, the flavours are “complex”, a hint of sweetness, crispiness in milk, a hint of toasted flavour. I’m happy with the 1/2 cup serving size whereas I usually eat a full cup of other cereals.
Needless to say, I will be vigilant about jumbo sizes of Grain Shop or sales on the regular-sized boxes from now on….
